Sugar Creek Golf Course has achieved designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, recognizing the course's ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable golf course management.
The certification is presented by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. The effort to gain the designation was led by Golf Course Superintendent, Kevin Goss, whose leadership helped guide the course through the rigorous process.
Sugar Creek Golf Course is now one of more than 900 golf properties worldwide to earn certification from Audubon International.
"Joining the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary program has been a goal at Sugar Creek Golf Course for many years, and I am very grateful to the staff and community members who contributed to this effort,” says Goss.
“Achieving certification is a major milestone in our environmental program. Certification helps support environmental priorities long into the future as we maintain and build on our current projects."
Sugar Creek Golf Course earned certification by implementing a variety of environmentally responsible practices that benefit both the course and the surrounding community. These accomplishments include:
- Producing beneficial green spaces
- Promoting and protecting quality wildlife habitat
- Conducting maintenance practices responsibly
- Ensuring surface water is protected from pollutants
As a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the course is committed to building on these achievements and continuing to implement sustainable practices and programs that will benefit golfers, wildlife, and the community.
“Membership as a certified sanctuary provides opportunities to participate in Audubon programs like Monarchs in the Rough, which sends free native seed to members, and BioBlitz, a community tour and species counting event we hosted in June. We look forward to hosting tours and educational events in the future,” Goss says.
